Plymouth-Canton Community Schools is ready to welcome your child to Kindergarten for the 2024-25 School Year!

General Kindergarten/Y5K Information:

• All students in Kindergarten and Y5 Kindergarten will be enrolled at their home school.  If enrollment exceeds the number of available spaces students may be assigned to another school in the district (referred to as overflow)
• If there is limited enrollment in a Y5 Kindergarten classroom, it may be necessary to offer a combination class (Y5K and traditional Kindergarten) 

Kindergarten Updates:

All elementary schools except Gallimore and Allen will have Young 5 Kindergarten (Y5K) classrooms.  

• Eligibility: Students who will be 5 years old on or before December 1 are eligible for traditional Kindergarten or Young 5s Kindergarten (Y5K).  

• A waiver form is required for those children born between September 1st and December 1 (optional document within online pre-enrollment process) for families requesting early enrollment. 

• Families will indicate if Y5K is preferred  (Y5K enrollment form within the online pre-enrollment process).   

• Should we have limited enrollment in a Y5K classroom, we may have to offer a combination class (Y5K and traditional Kindergarten) in some instances.

• The pre-enrollment process is currently open in MISTAR.  During pre-enrollment, families complete and upload required documentation.

• Once the enrollment documentation is verified, you will receive an email to schedule an appointment with the building administrative assistant. 

Registering Your Child: 

• Steps: 

  • Complete pre-enrollment paperwork online. You will be required to upload the following documents in the Pre-Enrollment Manager.

  • 1. Original certified birth certificate (required)

    2. Immunization requirements/records (required) 

       • Kindergarten students are also required to provide proof of vision screening.

    3. Parent/guardian's driver's license for identification purposes only (not to be used for residency)

    4. Two Items to Prove Residency:

       1. If you own (choose one set of documents):

          • Property tax record and utility bill (DTE or Consumers Energy)

          • Homeowners insurance policy and utility bill (DTE or Consumers Energy)

          • Warranty deed/closing statement for a new resident and confirmation of utility services ordered/transferred

       2. If you rent or lease (All items are required)

          • Signed current rental/lease agreement (signed and notarized by the homeowner) and one utility bill (DTE or Consumers Energy)

       3. If you share a home that is not in one of the parents name 

          • You will need to obtain a shared living agreement. This  requires a meeting with the parent and homeowner to sign an affidavit, with proof of residency. Select this link to schedule an appointment for the shared living agreement. 

  • Complete waiver form, if applicable (necessary if your child will be 5 years old between September 1 and December 1)

  • Complete Y5K enrollment form, if applicable (necessary if you are requesting the Young 5 Kindergarten class)

  • Provide Hearing and Vision screening information

General Kindergarten/Y5K Information:

All Kindergarten and Y5K classrooms are designed to support physical, social-emotional, and cognitive development of students and follow the Michigan Academic Standards.

Young 5s Kindergarten (Y5K) Information:

• All schools (except Gallimore and Allen) have both Kindergarten and Y5K classrooms 

• The Y5K classes will operate during the regular school hours

• Y5K students who live within the transportation boundaries will be able to ride the bus

• Pacing of the curriculum is adjusted in Y5K classrooms

• Transitions between activities are supported 

• A focused approach to building motor skills throughout the day

• A focus on sensory-based experiences

• A focus on play based experiences are incorporated within center time 

• A focus on working with others and being part of a group

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all Kindergarten classes full-day?

• Yes, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools only offer full-day kindergarten classes for Y5K and traditional Kindergarten.

If my child attends the Y5K will their next step be a second year of Kindergarten following Y5K or will their next step be to move to first grade?

• Because we follow the Michigan Academic Standards for Kindergarten in both traditional Kindergarten and Y5K classes, our Y5K students have the opportunity to move to first grade.  Throughout the year, the teacher will communicate with the family regarding all developmental areas and will make a recommendation for placement in the Spring for either traditional Kindergarten or first grade.

Kindergarten Readiness and Supporting your child for Kindergarten

• Help your child gain independence - Support your child in being able to dress themselves, tie their own shoes, zip their coats, clean up dishes from the table, wash their hands, complete simple chores.
• Support conversation and listening to others - Talk with your child, encourage questions, play games with turn taking, read books, tell stories,  talk about the stories or the facts in a book, encourage retelling of an event or a story, etc.
• Encourage curiosity and a sense of wonder - Talk with your child.  Ask open-ended questions such “What do you think?”, “Is there another way?”, “How might you…?” Explore new experiences together: visit the zoo, the library, the mall, the park etc.  
• Support problem solving and perspective taking - Encourage your child to figure things out.  Ask questions like, “Is there another way?”, “What could you do to fix that?”, “How might you help with?”,  “How did that make your friend feel?”
• Support the development of personal responsibility - Help your child recognize that being part of a school community sometimes means comprise or not getting their way.  Helping children experience and understand how to lose at a game, how to wait for a turn at something etc. will build foundations for problem solving in the school environment.  Play board games and card games with your child and support them when they experience loss. Provide opportunities for turn taking and experiences where they can practice delayed gratification.  Identify simple rules in the game and help reinforce following those rules.
• Encourage reading and writing - Read to your child, notice familiar signs in your community, encourage your child to make lists, draw pictures, play with letters and words.  
• Engage in math-based  activities - Encourage measuring and counting. Cook with your child, play memory and simple card games, spend time playing board games together, count, sort and group items when driving in the car or grocery shopping.
